Brown noise vs white noise

White noise has equal energy at all frequencies, so it sounds bright and hissy. Brown noise drops by 6 dB per octave, so most of its energy is in the bass — it sounds deep and warm. If white noise feels harsh, brown noise is usually much easier to listen to for hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is brown noise?
Brown (or Brownian) noise has much more energy in the low frequencies than white noise. It sounds deep and soft — like a strong waterfall, heavy rain on a roof or an airplane cabin.
Why do people with ADHD like brown noise?
Many people with ADHD say brown noise quiets their busy thoughts and makes it easier to focus. Research is still limited, but it's a safe, free thing to try.
Is it safe to sleep with noise on all night?
For adults, yes at a moderate volume — keep it quieter than a normal conversation (below about 50–60 dB). For babies, place the device at least 2 meters (7 ft) from the crib and keep the volume low, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Does it work with my phone screen off?
Yes on most phones: the sound is played like music, so it keeps going when the screen locks. If your phone stops it, keep the screen on with low brightness, or add the page to your home screen.
